The village where we now reside.

Wallace is a pretty village by the sea. It is located on the middle of the Sunrise trail between Tatamagouche and Pugwash. On clear days the sunrises and sunsets are breath taking. The bridge offers an excellent spot to view the sunset or during the day you can watch the abundant bird life. Canada geese, ducks, herons, etc. fatten up on the tidal mud flats. At first glance there is not much going on in Wallace - but look again. The fish plant is a major employer and is found in the heart of the village. The wharf behind it offers a boat launching ramp for the fishermen and the public. We have a rock quarry which is located out of sight just up the hill. Some of the sandstone quarried here has been used for one of the parliment buildings located in Ottawa. We also have a cement plant. We don't have a marina but that project is being worked on and hopefully in the future it will reach fruitation. We don't have a shopping mall but we do have a gas station, convenicene stores, health food store, hardware store, restaurants and take-outs, post office, elementary school, several churches, the Northumberland Chorale if you enjoy singing, fire station, and a seniors complex. Our community hall always has something going on - dances, fleamarkets, lobster suppers, fishing contests, etc. For children there are organizations like Sparks, Brownies, and Guides. There is also a recreational sports field that offers both summer and winter activities.

The Wallace Museum offers many activities and historic displays. Located at the museum is a lovely garden which has entrances to walking trails. Here can be found specimens of endangered black ash trees. Or just come and enjoy "tea in the garden," from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Museum hours are: Tues.-Sat. 9-5 p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m. Closed Monday. You can take part in the events they sponsor or go walking the hiking trails. The St. Matthews Presbyterian Church in Wallace is a historical site. Other churches are as follows: St. Andrew's Anglican in Wallace, the Baptist Church in Wallace River and Wallace Bridge. Fundamentalists Church in Wallace River, St. John's United Church in Wallace and Malagash and St. Andrew's Church in Fox Harbour. The two church camps are: Malagash Bible Camp in Malagash and the Seventh-Day Adventists Camp on the Gulf Shore.

The area surrounding Wallace is cottage country and we have two Provincial Parks with bathing facilities. You are never far from the water so you can explore the beaches, dig for clams or just sunbathe to your heart's content. If you prefer camping there are several campgrounds to choose from. Many cottage industries offer crafts, antiques, hair cuts, theraputic messages, etc. People often move here to retire and they enjoy the space, less traffic, nice weather and the fellowship offered by good neighbours who are always eager to help.

The people are proud of their heritage. There is the Loyalist Site in North Wallace and the Simon Newcombe Monument at Wallace Bridge. Acadian dykes can be found throughout the area. Originally the native Mi'kmaq named Wallace "Remsheg" meaning "the place between." The French Acadian settlers came to the Wallace area in 1710 but were later expelled in 1755. After the American Revolution ended, Loyalist settlers immigrated to Wallace in 1783. Then in 1825, Remsheg was renamed Wallace, in honour of Scotland's hero, William Wallace, and New Scotland's first treasurer, Michael Wallace.

The luxurious Fox Harb'r Resort with its health spa and golf course is about 10 minutes from Wallace and the Northumberland Golf Links is about a 15 minute drive. Twenty minutes drive takes you to Tatamagouche or Pugwash where you have your banking facilities, libraries, schools, drug store, hospital, grocery store, liquor store plus small gift stores.

Jost Winery in Malagash is only 20 minutes drive from Wallace and so is Ski Wentworth in Wentworth. The town of Truro or Amherst is an hours drive from Wallace.

So I repeat, look again

at Wallace. It really is a beautiful

place to live by the sea.
