The Shelburne County Women's FishNet is a non-profit organization striving to create a support network for the women of Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. One of our aims is to provide support for women in all aspects of their lives in coastal communities.
In April 1995, Nova Scotia Women's Fishnet held a series of workshops that were intended to provide a forum for women to discuss their concerns and perspectives about the inshore fishing industry. The workshops also provided an opportunity for women to voice their desire to have input into the decision-making processes that have both a direct and an indirect impact on their everyday lives. From these workshops, Shelburne County Women's FishNet was initiated. The focus of the SCWF became "Women Helping Women Helping Themselves".
As a direct result of the 1998-1999 research, Shelburne County Women's FishNet supported the opening of two women's resource centres, one in Woods Harbour and one in Lockeport.
In April, 2000, Shelburne County Women's FishNet formed a partnership with the Women for Economic Equality Society, and initiated a project to bring women back into community-based economic development.
Shelburne County Women's FishNet plays a leadership role in empowering women to identify the coastal community issues that concern them. The SCNF also enables women to link with the resources they need to implement programs that focus on these issues.
