William & Gertrude were presented a French Mantle Clock on the occation of their marriage with the inscription:-
"Presented to Mr & Mrs Rawls from the Teachers & Members of Llanreath Mission on the occation of their marriage"
This clock is in the possesion of their Grandaughter Diana at this time (2003)
Gertrude attended local fairs dressed as the "Pearly Queen" with her friend Mrs Hobs dressed as the "Pearly King".
She preserved home grown Runner Beans using salt from blocks kept in a box in the kitchen.

Heather Rawls writes June 2003:-

"I spoke to Marion about the Rawls family home in Gosport. I remember Mayfield Rd mentioned as a brat. The family moved there from Melplash and Marion says she was born there. They moved to Little Anglesey in Coronation year (1937?) Mayfield road is to the north of Alver Creek, near Stone Lane School. Mayfield Rd has very small terraced houses like dads on Park Rd. so Little Anglesey must have felt palatial when they got there. Aunty Beat lived on Bury Rd. with a Mulberry tree just outside her back door. I turned deep red a few times!!"

Gertrude married William Edmund Rawls son of Thomas George Rawls and Mary Jane Mintern on 18 Feb 1913 in St Johns Church, Llanreath, Pembroke Dock. William was born on 6 Mar 1887 in Melplash, Netherbury R.S.D.. He died on 22 Jul 1956 in 3, Little Anglesey Road, Gosport, Hants. He was buried in Melplash, Dorset. William was employed as Policeman In HM Dockyard. Also Shipwright... He was employed as Policeman In HM Dockyard. Also Shipwright...

A big, tall man, only child of Thomas George...left school at 12 to help on the farm, later apprenticed as a wheelwright and carpenter (unfortunately wooden wagon wheels went out with the advent of the car.) He left home at an early age to go to London and joined the Metropolitan Police on 16th Aug 1909. He was transferred to Her (His) Majesty's Dockyard Police and sent to Pembroke Dock, where he met his future wife, Gertrude Annie Barnes.

Subsequently, was transferred to H.M. Dockyard in Portsmouth (abt 1916) they lived then at 115 Mayfield Road, Gosport, and about 1935 bought a house at 3 Little Anglesea Road, Alverstoke, near Gosport (now a listed building) He retired from the police on 20 Aug 1934 at which time his pay was 4 pound 15 shillings a week. He was an upright 'pillar of the local community' and was a sidesman at St Mary's Church in Alverstoke for some years. Despite this, he was a hard man who held, by today's standards some views many would find intolerable.

When he died, he left a legacy in his will to the church in Melplash of £50. At the time of his death, £50 represented a tidy sum, and it is likely that this legacy caused some fairly sharp family reactions.
The church yearbook entrys for 1957 include:-

"A legacy of £50 received from the will of William Edmund Rawles (misspelled) son of Thomas George Rawles sexton 1902 - 1944 enabled the lamps over the gate at the transept door to be renewed. The porch light outside was replaced by an old gilt lantern inside - presented by Lady Diana Tiarks" (so it wasn't used for a stained-glass window)

He asked in his will that his body be taken back to Melplash for burial (a great expense in those days) and this was done. He had made life so unbearable for his wife, that she did not even attend his funeral. There is a chart of burial plots inside the church at Melplash, and this shows several entries for the name 'Rawls'. His precise location in the churchyard, whilst shown on the chart, cannot be easily verified since there is no headstone bearing his name.

He later employed his son inlaw Wally Blundon and moved the business to Colby Drive, Waterloo. Upon his death Wally continued the Hot Stamping , employing Toms daughter Carol and making Event Badges, Plaques, Membership Tags etc. until he retired in 2004.

He purchased a property on the cliff high above Colpoys Bay, Wairton where he built a cottage he named "The Resting Place". The original cottage burnt to the ground in 1979 but was rebuilt on the same site. The property is now (2002) lovingly cared for by his daughter Diana and is decorated with many of his photos and artwork which were "shown" in the latter years.

Molly attended Stone Lane Girls School , Gosport from 1922 to 1930 as proven by a letter from the head mistress K.E.Gray dated 23 Oct 1930.
Molly worked as a maid in a large house in the New Forrest? I have a letter of referance from Plumber Manor, Stirminster Newton, Dorset dated 2/6/41 saying that Mollie had served as a housemaid and parlourmaid for the last 7 years.
In 1944 she attended the National Rally for Women at County Hall, Westminster Bridge,London where the Queen spoke. 1935 Eddie was in the R.A.F. and serving on the aircraft carrier Courageous
Eddie finished his career in the R.A.F. as a Sqn/Ldr and at one time was Air Attache at the Brittish Embassy in Paris.
He owned and operated "The Inn by the Sea" Lee on Solent for a number of years in the late 60s early 70s

Note "Seafeild" where Eddie was born was apparently a part of Gosport:- Seafield. 19th century. Presumably named from the low-lying nature of the area, this was originally Oaker Common, one of the 'tree' names in Alverstoke (see Haslar, Privett and Ewer Common). It was known as Dock Village before the proposal in 1839 to build a ship canal here.

Alverstoke. Stoce, Allwardstok. 10th century. Old English stoc - a farm or place. Legend has it that Stoke was given to St. Swithun's Priory in Winchester by the widowed Lady Alwara, the name thus becoming Alwarstoke. The village, with its parish church, continued to be called Stoke until the 1820s when it became known as Alverstoke Village (to distinguish it from Alverstoke Parish). The original form lives on in Stoke Road and Stokes Bay.

Anglesey. Angleseyville. 1820s. An attempt to establish Stokes Bay as a spa and seaside resort, it was endorsed by Henry, first Marquis of Anglesey, hence the name.

Edmund married Betty Hood daughter of Frederick Hood and Evelyne Mary Robinson on 1 Feb 1941 in Holy Trinity Aylesbury. Betty was born on 11 Jan 1923. She died on 17 Dec 1997 in Les Sables D'Olonne. She was buried in Les Sables D'Olonne.

Lionel Willam Rawls was born in Oct 1918. He was christened in Alverstoke. He died in 1972.

Bill joined the Territorials in 1938 at the time of the Munich crisis and so got called up as soon as the war started. He was on the heavy A.A. guns, and later went thru North Africa with the Desert Rats and up thru Italy.

It seems probable that Bill served with the 57th (Wessex) Anti-Aircraft Regiment consisting of - HQ, 213th Bty: Portsmouth, 214th Bty: Southsea, 215th Bty: Gosport, 219th Bty: Newport, Isle of Wight.
Initially the 57th served as UK Air Defense and protected the docks and staging areas along the South Coast. The 57th Regiment, whose main responsibility was protecting the Portsmouth Docks, distinguished itself in March 1941, when the Regiment was actively engaged in defending the Naval Dockyard against air attacks over several nights. In one four-hour engagement 1,421 rounds were fired and following the destruction of the command post, fire control was exercised from a trestle table illuminated by a hurricane lamp using graphic range tables and measuring the fuses with a length of string.
By 1942, once the Battle of Britain was won, both Regiments finally saw service overseas and served together in the North Africa (1942) and Italy (1943) Campaigns with the 8th Army, The Desert Rats.

Diana Rawls (Blundon) writes "As far as Auntie Irene and Uncle Bill's wedding. Granny must have been invited because she went to sign the register with the couple an Mum and Hazel and I were always referred to as the "univited guests"

Lionel married Irene M Fletcher daughter of Fletcher and Baker about Oct 1946 in Upper Agbrigg, Yorkshire. Irene was born about Jan 1919 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. She died in 1958 in Portsmouth.

We believe Irene was born in 1919, there were 3 Irene M's born in England in 1919 but given the proximity of Hudersfeild to Bill & Irene's place of marriage we believe the information entered to be correct.

Marion Justine Rawls was born 1 on 12 Jan 1925 in Mayfield Rd, Alverstoke, Hampshire. She was christened in Melplash, Netherbury, Dorset ?. She died on 11 Nov 2005 in Barkway, Herts.

When the Second World War was declared in 1939 Marion, who was aged 14 at the time, was evacuated to a more rural area outside Gosport. After leaving school she went to a commercial college to learn touch-typing and office skills. This led her to her first job as an office junior with a local firm of Estate Agents for which she was paid fifteen shillings per week! Her job at the Estate Agents came to an abrupt halt when the offices were bombed in 1941. The next three years were spent as an ARP warden. When the air-raids finished the ARP became disbanded, and she then joined the NAAFI in 1945 with the promise of being sent overseas.

Before long, she was posted to Egypt with the NAAFI and it was whilst there that she met and fell in love with an RAF fighter pilot, Bill Doidge, who came from Brixham, Devon. Bill and Marion were married in Cairo and they eventually returned to Britain by troopship.

Marion married Frederick William Doidge son of Henry (Jabez) Doidge and Frances Rogers on 2 Nov 1946 in All Saints Cathedral, Cairo, Egypt. Frederick was born on 5 Jun 1921 in Brixham, Devon, England. He died on 17 Sep 1998 in Barley, Royston, Herts. He was buried in Cambridge Crematorium.

Bill was a Spitfire pilot in the R.A.F during the war and served in Malta, Scicily and Italy. He led a raid from England on the V2 Rocket sites in Holland and was mentioned in dispatches. He stayed in the R.A.F. untill 1951.

Marion writes in 1998.
Now a little bit about Bill's family. His father was Jabez Henry Doidge (Harry) and he had 2 sisters Mable and Kate. His father was something to do with the tin mines in Cornwall, but retired to Brixham and had a small farm and started Doidges Hotel which Bill's Mum and Dad had to run. His Mum was Francis Rogers, she had 1 brother John who emigrated to the U.S.A. Bill met him when he was sent over for training with the American Airforce, and 3 sisters Edith, Nellie and Florrie. His other Grandfather was a Coast guard. Bill had 1 sister Betty and she and Stan had Elizabeth and Jennifer. Stan died quite young and she is now married to Ray.

Heather Rawls writes June 2004.
" A Messerschmitt may be at the Sandown air show this year. If there is it will be the one that uncle Bill flew from Tangmere after it was captured to see how it compared with the Spitfire. Marion has a newspaper article with picture of Bill standing by aircraft at Duxford after its restoration." (This aircraft a Messerschmitt Bf109G-2 (10639) was captured at Gambut-Main by the RAAF and was shipped back to England for evaluation and testing as RN228 in RAF camouflage, it spent time with both 1426 Enemy Aircraft Flight at Collyweston and the Central Fighter Establishment at Tangmere. Following a forced landing at the Duxford Autumn Air Show on 12th October 1997, this aircraft was restored at Duxford)
In 1954 he bought a village milk round and later employed his wifes sister Molly.
